How acupuncture can help you through hormonal changes

There is no getting away from it women’s health can be greatly influenced by the fluctuations and changes in their hormone levels -right from puberty and the onset of the menstrual cycle, through to the postmenopausal years, where the lack of hormones can produce their own set of difficulties!

Don’t be at the mercy of your hormones

Often women assume that PMT symptoms, painful menstrual cycles , hot flushes or anxiety are the products of hormonal changes and that little can be done about them, however Chinese medicine theory considers that these symptoms arise as a result of energy imbalances or blockages in the body. The energy blockages and therefore the symptoms can be resolved with effective acupuncture treatment.
Treatment is always aimed at relieving the physical symptoms of pain or hot sweats as well as the mental and emotional symptoms such as tiredness and anxiety.

Is it my hormones?

Don’t worry, acupuncture treatment will be based on the symptoms you are experiencing. It doesn’t matter if they are perimenopausal, menopausal or just related to everyday fluctuations in the balance of the body, they can be addressed with acupuncture. In your first treatment we will make sure to identify everything that seems ‘ not quite right’ compared to how you would normally be.

The NHS lists the following as symptoms of menapause.

  • hot flushes – short, sudden feelings of heat, usually in the face, neck and chest, which can make your skin red and sweaty

  • night sweats – hot flushes that occur at night

  • difficulty sleeping – this may make you feel tired and irritable during the day

  • reduced sex drive (libido)

  • problems with memory and concentration

  • vaginal dryness and pain, itching or discomfort during sex

  • headaches

  • mood changes, such as low mood or anxiety

  • palpitations – heartbeats that suddenly become more noticeable

  • joint stiffness

  • aches and pains

  • reduced muscle mass

  • recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
