Fertility and IVF Acupuncture treatment for fertility can start long before any conventional medical treatment is embarked upon. If a woman is having trouble conceiving after several months of trying, then that is a good time to start a course of acupuncture. Initial treatments are aimed at establishing and maintaining a good menstrual cycle. A woman's cycle should be regular, pain free, without any clots or flooding, and lasts for around five days. Treatment can also eliminate PMS symptoms, such as breast tenderness and irritability, in the lead up to a period. The emphasis in later treatments will change depending on an individual's reproductive history. It can be used during the different phases of IVF treatment to reduce any down-regulation side effects, to promote the reproductive energy of the body (essential for good egg development), and to improve the chance of implantation after embryo transfer. Acupuncture is gaining recognition for its help during IVF treatments and many IVF consultants now recommend a course of acupuncture to improve the success rate of treatment. Fertility issues can also affect the male partner where they may experience low sperm counts or low sperm motility. Acupuncture can be used to treat these conditions as well.
